Get outdoors in JOZI!

As we are based in Gauteng, we can not help but be passionate about our City!

Many of us have lived in Gauteng for most our life but get so wrapped up with this " city" life we often don't get time to appreciate the fun, adventure and outdoor attractions we have surrounding us. So you're asking yourself, what am I on about? Well there is so much activity available, all on our doorstep ...adding that element of fun and excitement while exploring our "City of Gold" and surrounding countryside. Having said that we would like to showcase some of our highlighted outdoor living activities surrounding us that we highly recommend for a day out in the fresh air.

Most definitely one of our best sellers at the moment, is taking on the handlebars of a 4 wheeler! Yes Quad biking.. you do not need previous experience as all our tours are guided with briefings before setting out as safety is of utmost importance! Whether it's nature outrides through scenic terrain of the Hartebeespoort Dam Area or the dusty streets of Soweto, let us send you out on this fun day outing, with just a touch of adrenalin and a bit of dirt!

If you prefer to experience more of a birds eye view of the happenings below an "airborne" adventure may be for you! From Hot Air Ballooning over the picturesque Magalies Mountains to spotting plains game in below reserves, you can be assured of an exhilarating adventure below the blue skies!
Another ever growing aerial sport is ziplining and canopy tours, one of the fastest growing eco-adventures with thousands of satisfied thrill-seekers having already caught the bug. Try this unforgettable adventure as you slide from one platform to the next along a series of steel cables set amongst magnificent natural surroundings!

Planning your company conference or end of year function?

With us swiftly entering the last 5 months of 2013, it's the time of year leading up to lot's of buzz and movement in the event side of both corporate and leisure group conferencing and of year end celebrations and rewards.

To those who are left with the responsibility of organizing such events, it can be stressful and daunting... but no panic please ... there are many professionals who can guide you and take care of the finer details to ensure a successful event!

African Chapter Tours have put together a basic outline for pre-planning and choosing a great venue to get the best results for your conferences and end of year outing and functions.

  • Have all the applicable information at hand. The more information you can provide the agent or supplier the more efficient assistance and quotation you will receive. That includes number of delegates, room types ie single/sharing, programme requirements, meals and additional activities and of course budget!
  • Timing is a big factor, this effects your costs. Rates are often seasonal or gaged on midweek and weekend rates. Book in advance this will give you better choice and options. Last minute bookings can result if higher prices and limited options.
  • If it is the first time using a venue, get recommendations or referrals or arrange a site visit to ensure your expectations are met and your requirements are fulfilled.
  • Also ensure once you booked you are aware of all the terms and inclusion, exclusion, deposits and full payment policies and cancellation terms.
  • Should you require Wi-Fi ensure the venue can provide and if costs apply. Most venues located in the City Hubs offer such value adds however your more remote venues may offer limited services.
  • Also check cell phone coverage with the venue and advise your delegates as this can cause much havoc if you aren't aware there is limited or no cell phone coverage.
  • If  you will require special meals, check first if the venue can assist, as often their will be a surcharge especially for Kosher and Halaal meals and ensure you budget for it.
  • If your company has a environmental mission statement that includes green practices then limit your search of venues by approaching similar like minded venues that have the same values and goals when following a responsible & green tourism protocol.
  • If you are planning a few events during the year or over specific period then provide this information to ensure the best offer can be negotiated based on the repeat business and book dates all in advance to secure a good deal!
If you are looking for some different day activities for team building our corporate day outings , African Chapter Tours highlights some of our bestsellers.

Highlighting the beautiful Klaserie Private Game Reserve

It often causes a bit of confusion around the "Greater Kruger National Park"...which is a joint venture between the Kruger National Park and Associated Private Nature Reserves. Together they have an area of more than 20.000.000 Ha (or more than 20.000 km²), under their joint conservation. One of these associated game reserves is Klaserie Private Game Reserve situated in the Limpopo Province, past Hoedspruit.

The Klaserie Private nature Reserve (KPNR) is one of the largest privately owned nature reserves in South Africa covering some 60 000 hectares and is part of the greater Kruger National Park. It is an entirely non-government organization involved in the full spectrum of Nature Conservation.
The KPNR was established in 1969 and was officially proclaimed a nature reserve in 1972.

In search for factual information I discovered there are various commercial operations within the Klaserie Reserve ranging from rustic bush camps and walking trails to luxury game lodges. It is the Reserve's policy to keep the commercial and thus human impact to a minimum as it is our mission to make the KPNR as near a pristine environment as possible.

African Chapter Tours has recently added Ndzuti Safari Camp to its Portfolio which offers a truly magnificent safari experience at a very affordable cost. The Safari camp has only 4 en suite air conditioned rooms offering a total of 8 people an exclusive yet traditional safari experience coupled with true south African hospitality.  To compliment your relaxing bush safari there is a well established garden housing a boma, swimming pool and lookout hide facing onto a water hole.

Interestingly ...The “Big Five” was initially a term that referred to the five most dangerous animals to hunt and it is a shame that many visitors to the African Bush sometimes place the success of their safari in the sighting of just five animal species. The Big Five are without doubt exciting animals to see but the African Bush is diverse and varied with countless other animals and birds that will enhance any visitor’s safari. This concession of 3500 odd hectares falls along both sides of the Klaserie River and this attracts herds of elephant as well as buffalo and of course the big cats that hunt them!

An alternative unique experience in the Klaserie Private Game Reserve is affording guests the ability to see the wonders of the savannah close-up on a Foot walking adventure safaris, allowing for the  most intimate experience with the wildlife, flora and fauna of the landscape.  Shangaan Trackers will keep guests intrigued with their ability to find animals utilising only their senses and explain the traditional and medicinal uses of plants you will come across during your authentic african journey. The lodge itself is a traditional rustic Bush Camp comprising of thatched rondavels, situated amongst beautiful bush trees and wide open spaces. Hot water is provided through simplistic “donkey boiler” system, offering piping hot waters with light provided after dark by “hurricane lamps”. All adding to the atmosphere and adventure if you up to it!

For more information contact us for your tailormade package to the Klaserie Private Game Reserve to suit your interests and requirements. Rates are very affordable and under the R2000 p/p category which is great value for money for a quality Bush and Safari Experience.

Should you have been lucky enough to experience any of the above establishments or have had the opportunity to visit the Klaserie Private Game Reserve. We would love for you to share your experiences or input!

Winter spells out a cup of hot cocoa and cosy comfortable getaways!

As winter creeps in we tend to look for more comfort in our foods, change the way we spend our lazy days (where ever there is heat!) and where we travel to for our enjoyment. Apart from all the fantastic suggestions I have for you, of where to go and what to do and the fantastic special winter warming travel offers African Chapter can offer you during these colder months, I have even more good news to share with you!

Cocoa is really good for you and not just a tasty treat. So next time you sip on a cup of hot cocoa you can leave the guilt behind as it has been said there are health benefits when consuming cocoa! Considered as a strong weapon to keeping healthy by the Aztecs, new research confirms that cocoa is key to the path of good health.

Read on to find some of the health benefits of cocoa:

  • One of the most important benefits of cocoa is the large number of antioxidants it contains. It has twice the number of antioxidants of red wine. Antioxidants help to strengthen your immune system, increase energy levels and help you look and feel younger.
  • Cocoa is full of flavonoids which increases the blood flow to the breain. Flavonoids increase the blood flow to the brain. Increased blood flow to the brain generally means a better disposition. They also help guard against depression and dementia :)
  • Decreases the possibility of clots in your bloodstream. Drinking hot cocoa will actually reduce the risk of having heart problems. First of all platelets will have a much harder time in grouping together due to this compound. When platelets group together it can lead to strokes or heart attacks.
  • Cocoa can also lower your blood pressure and improve your blood flow. This helps to guard against heart disease and stroke and makes it easier for you to lose weight.
  • great source of magnesium, which is a very important in the proper formation of teeth and bones, in regulating bowel functions, in relaxation of blood vessels and regulation of blood sugar levels.
  • Lower your cholesterol.  Lastly but not least the fact that drinking this delicious beverage in the morning will help reduce your "bad" cholesterol levels and increase the levels of “good” cholesterol.
So whip up a cup of hot cocoa and reap these rewards this winter, together with our awesome autumn and winter value added packages! Our popular travel package choices are:

    Why you shouldn't feed baboons?

I was reading up on an article about our CHACMA BABOON in South Africa, often seen when touring the countryside, particularly in the Cape. You see the signs along side roads asking us
" Please do not feed the baboons" this is for a reason as you might of gathered but why is this?
    • You may think it's fun and that you are helping them survive, but they then learn to associate food with humans.
    • They become demanding, grabbing food, jumping onto cars, and can cause injury.
    • Troops start frequenting roadsides in the hope of being fed, leading to baboon injuries and death by vehicles.
However feeding a baboon is actually illegal and this law is there to protect us. Generally baboons that are fed by humans start to become aggressive and in the end are shot.

The Chacma baboon is also known as the Cape baboon, is from the Old World Monkey family. The Chacma baboon is amongst the largest and heaviest baboon species and the largest of the monkey family. Baboons can grow up to 120cm tall and their tails are around 2 feet long. Males can have large canine teeth as long as 2 inches. They are dark brown to grey in colour and have a long, downward sloping face with close-set eyes under a heavy brow. Baboons walk on all four feet with their tails held in a crooked arch over their back.

Baboons in the Western Cape forage on over 100 different species of fynbos . Human food is full of calories and easily digestible relative to fynbos making it very attractive to baboons. However humans have encroached on natural areas as towns expand and with urban sprawl comes animal conflict as the latter are displaced and make for uneasy neighbours.

Baboon troops that live close to urban areas have fewer adult males than undisturbed troops. The lack of natural predators suggests that the males are being killed as a result of direct conflict with humans. Lone dispersing males are often seen as "rogues" and are treated as a threat to humans. It is important to realise that lone males reflect the natural movement of the males between troops which is nature's way of preventing inbreeding, as males do not mate with their mothers, sisters or aunts.
Killing males within troops has much wider implications for it opens the door for new males to immigrate into the troop. When this happens, the new male typically kills the previous male's offspring. One study of an urban troop reported that 53% of all infants born, died within their first year. It was suspected that most of these deaths were due to infanticide. The males engage in this shocking behaviour because without the cost of nursing an infant, females quickly come into oestrus and he is thus able to mate with her sooner than had she raised her infant.

Baboons are highly intelligent, adaptable wild animals. They learn quickly and many residents feel that they are under siege when troops invade their living space. Baboons have learnt to associate humans with food. Baboons know that human-derived food means that they do not have to spend hours foraging to obtain the nutrition they need. Therefore, the underlying principle is to make sure that what ever you do, you prevent baboons from having easy access to human-derived food.
Should you live in area where baboons frequant your living space then addressing a baboon problem on your property by identify what is attracting the baboons. These can be food, water or garbage, or a combination. Take action to remove the source, or at least make it a lot harder for the baboon to get to what is attracting them in the first place. Then look at ways of deterring baboons from your property.

Please read the following important points when travelling in SA and what to do when you encounter baboons and your safety in this regard:

    The Do Nots:
1.Open car windows or doors or get out your car
     2.Feed baboons
3.Try to grab back or hold onto your bag if a baboon steals it
4.Throw food packaging out your car. Throw it in baboon proof bins provided.
5.Scream when you see a baboon or try to chase it
6.Get between a mother baboon and their baby
7.Leave small children without attention or let them get close to the baboons
     8.Take pets near the baboons
9.Tease the baboon by holding food out of reach to it
10.Try to touch the baboon. This reduces their natural fear of humans and you may get bitten
11.Eat in front of the baboons or show them that you have food with you or in the car

    The Do's .
1.Lock car doors if you get out of the vehicle at a view site where baboons may be present
2.Stay in the car if baboons are near, and lock the car door
3.Hide food stored in the car if you leave the car
4.Take your camera out of its bag so that the baboon sees it as a camera and not as a bag that may hold food

Touching baboons is prohibited and can cause human injury if the male baboons interpret your behaviour as potentially causing harm to the troop. Baboons can potentially transfer human-carried diseases to baboons and vice versa.

What to do when a baboon is in your home or holiday accommodation.
    1. Firstly remain calm, and do not block their exit route. Baboons can read human body language and if you appear threatening, they will be nervous and unpredictable. Do not stare at them or look them directly in the eyes as this will be interpreted as aggressive behaviour and they make react similarly.
    2. Make sure that they have an obvious escape route – open windows and doors.
    3. Act with confidence (be the alpha male) and show them you are serious about getting them out your space
    4. Do not try to get food back from a baboon, it will fight you to retain the food
    5. Work towards getting the baboon towards the shortest escape route.
    6. Encourage the baboon towards the escape route with a water spray bottle.
Lets not work against these animals. They are entitled to their living space as much as we think we are, it is a problem we can not change and therefore have to deal with such sitautions in the best repsonsible manner possible.

Should you be visiting Plettenberg Bay in the Garden route, do make a stop in at the Tenikwa Rehab Centre, they offer one hour guided tours you are guaranteed to see the charismatic Cheetah, Leopard and enjoy a cat and mouse game with South Africa ’s seldom seen Lesser indigenous cats, such as the African Wild Cat, Servals and Caracal. Experience the inquisitiveness of the busy Meerkats, watch the Blue Cranes dance and take pleasure in getting to know the mischievous Marabou Storks. Also on offer is a really unique exxperience to spend some quality time with an endangered creature, as you "Walk with the Cheetahs".

    Are you sun smart?

After most of us returning from summer holidays where we have exposed ourselves to the sun more than normal this time of the year in all our travels, whilst enjoying the outdoors in some way or another... did you consider smearing yourself with a SAFE sunscreen? ? I did some research for my own interest and thought it was worth a share!

South Africans, in general tend to be relatively sun smart, but there are still those who choose to cover themselves in coconut oil and bake in the sun in order to achieve that perfect tan... well those days should be something of the past. Our sun is fierce and and climate change and various other factors now effects the exposure we are now faced with.

So how does a sunscreen vs sunblock work ?
Sunscreen combines organic and inorganic chemicals to filter the light from the sun so that less of it reaches the deeper layers of your skin. Like a screen door, some light penetrates, but not as much as if the door wasn't present.
Sunblock, on the other hand, reflects or scatters the light away so that it doesn't reach the skin at all. The reflective particles in sunblocks usually consist of zinc oxide or titanium oxide. In the past, you could tell who was using a sunblock just by looking, because the sunblock whited out the skin. Not all modern sunblocks are visible because the oxide particles are smaller, though you can still find the traditional white zinc oxide. Sunscreens usually include sunblocks as part of their active ingredients.

There are three regions of ultraviolet light.
    1. UV-A penetrates deeply into the skin and can lead to cancer and premature skin aging.
    2. UV-B is involved in tanning and burning of your skin.
    3. UV-C is completely absorbed by the earth's atmosphere.

The organic molecules in sunscreen absorb the ultraviolet radiation and release it as heat. •PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) absorbs UVB. Cinnamates absorb UVB .Benzophenones absorb UVA
•Anthranilates absorb UVA and UVB  and Ecamsules absorb UVA.

The term we all heard of but perhaps dont know what is stands for? SPF which stands for  Sun Protection Factor. It's a number that you can use to help determine how long you can stay in the sun before getting a sunburn. Since sunburns are caused by UV-B radiation, SPF does not indicate protection from UV-A, which can cause cancer and premature aging of the skin.

Your skin has a natural SPF, partially determined by how much melanin you have, or how darkly pigmented your skin is. The SPF is a multiplication factor. If you can stay out in the sun 15 minutes before burning, using a sunscreen with an SPF of 10 would allow you to resist the burn for 10x longer or 150 minutes. Although the SPF only applies to UV-B, the labels of most products indicate if they offer broad spectrum protection, which is some indication of whether or not they work against UV-A radiation. The particles in sunblock reflect both UV-A and UV-B.

South African shelves are packed with imported and locally manufactured sunscreens. Cansa has compiled a list of sunscreens that meet the conditions for its seal of approval. In order to receive this certification, sunscreens have to have a sun protection factor (SPF) of between 20 and 50, provide protection against both UVA and UVB, and meet the standards determined by the SABS. It is interesting to note that some of the most popular SA brands, such as Piz Buin, Everysun, and Tropitone are not on the list!?!

Since 2005 all sunscreens with the CANSA Seal of Recognition (CSOR) had to be broad-spectrum i.e. give protection against UVA and UVB radiation in a ratio of 0.4/1.

Recent research however, has found an increased correlation between UVA exposure and the onset of malignant melanoma, as well as non-optimal UVA protection provided by existing sunscreens in terms of the total UVA radiation spectrum and the photo stability of many critical sunscreen chemicals – leading to a worldwide demand for sunscreen with improved UVA protection properties...so the research continues.

For more information of the latest updates and findings, visit the CANSA website as the research conitunues. I hope this information I have shared gives you the opportunity to make a smarter choice when chosing which suncream to apply, if you didn't already know!

    Encountering Animals in interactive tours

South Africa offers a lot of unique experiences .. but having the opportunity to learn more and experience some of our magnificent wild animals up close and personal in the form an interactive and educational tour, this brings unique to a whole different level.

It is important however to excercise caution and ensure the experience you wish to partake in, is managed and handled by qualified personal and that safe and ethical practises are carried out.

It is one of our passions at African Chapter to bring you such mind blowing experiences which our team have encountered personally and ensured all safety and ethical practises are of high importance when operators conduct such tours. The good news is you do not need to travel into deep dark africa either to find these awesome creatures!

If you haven't had the opportunity to experience an animal encounter tour, this is some of the highlights  you can experience, within close proximity to Gauteng as well as in other Provinces such as Mpumalanga, Limpopo and the Cape's Garden Route. Most of these interactions have been introduced from the inception of breeding or conservation projects and offers a great opportunity to educate and simultaneously support such projects.

ELEPHANTS - This is truly special... these magnificent creatures will intrigue you with their intelligence and greatness! Options available in these encounters include educational, interaction, touch, feed and the ultimate.. riding on the backs of this giant of the African Bush or be submerged in water above them, as they swim! Can you imagine going on a Elephant Back Safari, as you scan the bushveld in the Pilansberg Game Reserve for game?

LION - The more popular options are interactions with lions cubs, they young ones, being typical playful and rather cute, this is a fun experience that is offered throughout our country. There are guided family vehicle tours for families with small children!

BIRDS -  There are a couple of Birds Of Prey Centres across our country and are mostly in existence due to rehabilitation and research centres therefore offering superb educational tours . Seeing these birds in action and getting up close, their size an capabilities will astound  you. Birds of Prey are characterised by their  powerful feet with sharp talons used to grip and kill their prey, hooked beaks which they use to tear the flesh and keen eyesight !

A guide will take you on an informative & educational guided tour to see, from small to big crocs of over 5 meters in length, some of South Africa's deadly snakes but you will have the opportunity to HOLD a baby crocodile as well as a variety of exotic snakes and even a tarantula if you so wish!

It is important to understand that there are age restrictions applicable to all these interactions which are there due to safety procedures and small children are seen as vulnerable prey to some of these animals and therefore most tours are suitable for responsible adults only!

    Transform your trash into treasure!

Today is National Re Cycling Day - 14th September 2012, I didn't want to bore you with what we already know but had a look at some ideas and "Up Cycle".

Transforming your trash into treasure is basically the process of  Up cycling! What a wonderful thought that is :) because we sure have enough of that lying around! Even retailers are catching onto this transforming all sorts in to beautiful pieces of decor, furniture and functional items.  By using throw-aways and upcycle it into something new and functional, the impact on the environment is very low and this is the ultimate we are all trying to achieve in some way!
My mother in law has always had a gift for doing just that, she makes ugly things look great by restoring and revamping! So it's not a new idea but definetly coming back into the "cool" factor for us all. It may not be treasure but at least find a new use for it before it finally heads to the dump.

I went looking for some ideas and here is what I came up with... you should never have to throw away these items!!

Plastic Milk bottles  - cut in half & use for storing stationery or odds and ends. Or make holes in the plastic lid tops, to make your very own homemade watering can, for keeping pot plants moist. I even found twirlly earings made out of the plastic from a milk bottle!
Glass Jars - Vases, store anything and everything. Seeds, Rice, Sauces ...endless uses!
Wine Bottle - Vases, candle holders, bubble bath foam etc
Wine Glasses - got some odd wine glasses over the years, turn upside down and put a candle on top!, looks great on a dinning table!
Toilet roll tubes - use to keep cords untangle or store. Decorate and use as serviette holders.
Bottle Tops - great to repaint and decorate will keep the young ones busy. Even great for making pieces for jewellery and even fridge magnets.
Odd Pillow cases - sew together with pillow inserted, makes a great "make shift" portable sleeping mattress for kids!
Wine corks - Cut slit across horizontally and use as business card holder or name tags for tables or save up many corks and thread together for a bath mat. You will need to consume quite a lot of wine for this one :)

"Upcycling is a component of sustainability in which waste materials are used to provide new products." So get creative, have fun... all at a low impact on our dear mother earth!

Alternatively if you not the creative type, support other organisation who are trying to make a sustainable living out of "up cycling "someone elses trash.

I came across  www.upcycle.co.za  or sponser a "green" project! Please feel free to share your comments, details of any community projects that you  may know of ,who sells" up cycled" goods and needs support. Lets all help!

Tips how to plan a "green" conference or event

Green is the keyword for most topics today, this can only highlight the importance of our collective efforts needed to make,in all aspects of our lives today.
If you are responsible for planning your company events, team building, conferences and end of year functions, you will need to consider the greening responsibilities your company have committed to and act on these policies.
Seem a bit daunting? Don't despair... understanding the basics and carefully selecting your venue you will no doubt be on the right path to hosting an sucessful green event!

What is a green event, you may ask? It is purely an event /conference that is hosted in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. The ultimate goal is to reduce the consumption of natural resouces, reduce waste to a minimum, limit the impacts on global climate and protect biodiversity and human health.
So .. decide how green you are to go, as bringing in the green principles into a function requires early planning in order to achieve a successful goal!

Here are some general tips to get you started:
    1. Chose your suppliers wisely... your venue, transport, caterers etc should all have the same goals and responsibility to the enviroment.
    2. Your venue will be your key contributer. You can check if the venue has a "green policy" in place and/or enviromental management system.
    3. For groups arrange a vehicle to transport everyone together in one vehicle or even better if you are able to use the Gautrain or even walk!..rather this than each individual using their own cars to the venue. This will offset your carbon foot print!
    4. Use local community based organisations for conference gifts or bags, thus contributing to the social development and community upliftment.
    5. Request products that are eco friendly and locally manufactured. Request food that is local, seasonal and organic whenever possible. Ensure that products are sustainably sourced.
    6. Try to avoid printed handouts and if it esessential, then use recycled or eco friendly paper.
    7. Do not use bottled water on the delegate table. Jugs of water are a winner!
    8. Any left over foods  you could donate to a charity or local community in need!
    9. Recycle!
    10. Select accommodation establishments that promote water conservation policies such as towel/linen laundry policies where delegates can chose to replace or reuse the towels or linen in their rooms.
    11. You should however also provide information to delegates so that they know how they can contribute to event greening through their actions.
    12. Utilise natural light and ventilation to reduce energy consumption When lights need to be used ensure that they are energy efficient. Switch off all lights and air-conditioners when leaving the room/venue.
    13. Include your efforts into your programme and bring it to everyones attention thus educating and encouraging good habits!
    14. Request for the electricity meter readings before, during and after the event for monitoring electricity usage to reduce consumption for future events (if possible).
    15. Suggest that delegates make a donation to offset their environmental footprint!

What is the positive outcome when an event is hosted in a green manner??

Increased economic, social and environmental benefits.
Reduced negative environmental and climate impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions, waste to landfill, and the reduction or degradation of biodiversity.
Enhanced economic impact, such as local job creation, investment and long-term viability, Including supporting local businesses and production..
Improved efficiency of resource use and less wastage.
Increased demand for infrastructure that supports green eventing, e.g. pedestrian and cycle routes.

Once you have achieved hosting a sucessful green event, provide a concluded report to your company or delegates so they can also understand and be part of the transformation to a green society. It will also help analysis your success and highlight areas where you can improve on your next project!

The in and out of Air pollution

Did you know? You will breathe in approximately 10,000 liters of air today, and every day!

Winter is the season where our country sees an increase in air pollution as more people light fires to keep themselves warm, leading to an increased amount of smoke, which poses a threat to the environment..Particularly in Johannesburg winter months between June to September is engulfed in a brown haze of pollution,  keeping the particulates and nitrous oxides that are the main components of the haze hovering low in the sky. The pollutants come from a variety of sources - coal fires, vehicle exhausts, veld fires, dust and industry.

    So why does this happen?
Quoted from a senior air quality researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), said weather conditions and the change of seasons had a definite role in the increased levels of pollution and dust. "Stagnant air episodes occur primarily in winter, when what is termed 'inversion conditions' occur. Hot air rises and cool air sinks, but under inversion conditions, usually during night time in winter months, the air near to the Earth's surface is colder than the air above it, preventing mixing and therefore pollutants emitted at the Earth's surface become trapped and concentrations build up. "
"Once the sun warms up the Earth's surface in the morning, the air near the Earth's surface warms up, and mixing and diffusion of pollutants can again occur and the pollutant layer is removed."

But you are thinking ...well, we are mostly indoors in winter?? Air pollution is present both indoors and outdoors!  Infact almost 90% of our time is spent indoors, and therefore the quality of air in our homes and places of work should be just as important to us all.

Here are some simple steps that you can take to quickly reduce indoor air pollution:

  • Look at the potential sources of indoor air pollution and reduce or remove them. This could be a contaminated carpet, or a simple filter change on the air-conditioning and filtration unit.
  • Increase the amount of outdoor natural air coming indoors, by opening windows, doors and vents on air-conditioning units.
  • Invest in air purifier/scruber. There are units to fit every budget with small units that will sit quietly on your desk to larger units that will purifier the air in an entire home.
  • Do not let anyone smoke indoors.
  • Replace the old filters on ventilation, heating and air-conditioning units
  • Actively remove excessive moisture from the air, which in turn will prevent the formation of mold
  • Should you be burning fires for heat, use only hard woods and stack the wood loosely to promote air circulation to prevent smouldering & smoke. A properly burning fireplace is hotter, produces less smoke and is more efficient. This means more warmth for less money and less impact to your health.!

  • For a bit of good news..bringing a bit of nature indoors with houseplants is an excellent idea and can help make you feel a bit more cheery and enhance your indoor air quality!

Here’s are a few from the top 10 anti-pollutant plants rated best by The New Ecologist.com. of which I know they are common to the South African gardener!
    1. English Ivy
    2. Parlor Ivy
    3. African Violets
    4. Christmas Cactus
    5. Peace Lily
Some indigenous options high on the VOC Filtration Efficiency(Volatile Organic Compounds) often seen in office buildings:

        1. Dracaena Alchemy
        2. Sansevieria Hahnii
3.Sansevieria Trifasciata (Mother in Law Tongue)
        4.Aloe Bainesii Tip

    For the Love of Water

I'm back on the topic of water! As it is March, the month where water awareness is big on the agenda with National Water Week and with focus on the 22 March - National Water Day. A perfect time to reflect on our current water crisis or even more critical outcome it could cause if we do no ACT now.

There are the facts we are possibly all already aware of but they tend to slip our minds with our  everyday rush in the rat race we live and our ever demanding lifestyles! However we unfortunately can not ignore the obvious and need to all be concerned and committed to  "waste not want not" this life giving substance!

Did you know that today, at least 400 million people live in regions with severe water shortages? South Africa is generally a water-scarce country, and it is predicted that demand for water will exceed supply within the next 15 to 20 years. It is inevitable that we will need to be more efficient in our water use.

Studies show that an average suburban house can reduce their water consumption by 30-40% without sacrificing any comforts (from about 250 litres/person/day to 150 litres/person/day). In addition, if grey water is recycled for garden use, household water use can be reduced by an astounding 60% or more with ease.

Waste water should be seen as a resource rather than a burden. A lot  can be done with "water waste' , if we are prepared to make some small changes, it is a start dont you think? We can't even begin to imagine the world with no water or little resources thereof?

Here is a subtle reminder of what we can all try do around our own homes!

The bathroom is where the most water waste happens, so we can all help conserve water by making these easy changes in your home:
    • Reduce the toilet flush volume – this alone can save you 20% of your total water consumption with no reduction in convenience. Older toilets have cisterns of around 11 litres, where in fact only half of this water volume is ever necessary. Modern toilets have more sensible cisterns of around 6 litres, and even this is unnecessarily wasteful for flushing liquids. Dual Flush devices are ideal. To reduce the flush volume without any new installations, you can put a displacement container in the cistern – try a 2 litre coke bottle filled with water, and a little sand as ballast.
    • Fix any leaking taps or pipes. Even a small leak from a tap can waste up to 75 litres of water a day.
    • Install water-saving shower heads and aerators.
    • Additionally, cut down your time in the shower and avoid taking baths. Taking even a 5-minute shower can waste up to 150 litres of water. Worse, a bath can use twice as much.
    • Turn off the water while shaving, washing your face, or brushing your teeth.

Water saving tips in the rest of  your household:
    • Water your plants early in the morning or in the evening. This will reduce the amount of water that evaporates throughout the day.
    • Learn about water-wise gardening!
    • Use mulch around plants and trees to hold water in the soil.
    • Use grey water. Grey water is water that is recycled from domestic activities such as showering or doing laundry. Using this water in your garden is a way to recycle and ultimately conserve. Installing a system to pump grey water (i.e. from the washing machine, basins, shower and bath) to the garden, most households will eliminate the need for any additional garden watering. This alone will reduce your consumption by 35%.
    • Match the size of your laundry load with water volume.
    • Repair dripping taps by replacing the washer. If a tap is dripping at a rate of 1 drop per second, you could be wasting up to 10,220 Liters per year!
So lets not forget in our every day lives how precious our water is, it is one of the vital gifts from mother earth that we need to spare!

    Leaping in to the year...2012!

Its 2012 and there is an extra day in the year ! Great news dont you think ?... an extra day to perhaps do something special or adventurous that you have thought of doing for a while now.
The more traditional theories taking place are for the ladies to take lead in the marriage proposals :)

The history behind the leap year is that it is needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days (a tropical year) to circle once around the Sun. If we didn't add a day on February 29 nearly every 4 years, we would lose almost six hours every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days! Bizzare isn't it?

Other theories concluded in the ancient Roman Calendar added an extra month every few years to maintain the correct seasonal changes. But Julius Caesar implemented a new calendar – the Julian Calendar in 45 BCE (Before Common Era) with an extra day added every 4 years. At the time, Leap Day was February 24, because February was the last month of the year! But now we follow the modern  Gregorian Calendar! People born on February 29 are also all invited to join The Honor society of Leap Year Day Babies!

So what ever your beliefs or superstitions, make the most of your extra day this year and make it an adventure or special memory to add to your book of life in 2012!

Tips on how to transform into an eco- tourist in 2012

So turning a new green leaf in 2012, here are a few tips on how you can transform and support being a international eco - tourist!

    1. Visit destinations which have conservation value, such as protected areas, World Heritage sites or where nature and culture is a key attraction.
    2. Plan a "doing" holiday, many organisation you with the arrangements of joining a volunturing programme, where you can include conservation or community projects into your holiday.
    3. Travel light: limit the packaging you bring with you.
    4. Chose like minded travel suppliers, those that are environmentally conscious and establishments that have  environmental policies in place. This will include efforts such as energy and water saving measures, recycling and contribution to local conservation or supporting local communities.
    5. If you can, try to get to your destination by train or coach – you’ll see more of the country you’re travelling in as well as reducing your carbon emissions.
    6. Make use of you own steam go for walks or bicycle rides or take part in such organised excursions.
    7. When it comes to dinning, choose locally sourced produce that’s in season and be aware that certain endangered species may be on the menu without your knowledge.
    8. Many wild plants and animals are in great danger … you can contribute to protecting them by avoiding buying souvenirs made from such eg (jewellery made from red coral, ivory etc)
    9. Dont bring seeds or plants back from your travels, as some may prove to be be invasive species.
    10. Observing Wildlife can be an incredible experience… but don’t disturb wildlife, for your own safety and theirs. Don’t feed animals, excpecially the "cute" animals such as monkeys, baboons and warthogs.

So give you getaways some thought when planning or should you be looking for some eco destination options to help get you on the right track of thinking, let African Chapter Tours assist you with your next eco chapter!
