As it is March, the month where water awareness is big on the agenda with National Water Week and with focus on the 22 March - National Water Day. A perfect time to reflect on our current water crisis or even more critical outcome it could cause if we do no ACT now.

There are the facts we are possibly all already aware of but they tend to slip our minds with our everyday rush in the rat race we live and our ever demanding lifestyles! However we unfortunately can not ignore the obvious and need to all be concerned and committed to "waste not want not" this life giving substance!

Did you know that today, at least 400 million people live in regions with severe water shortages? South Africa is generally a water-scarce country, and it is predicted that demand for water will exceed supply within the next 15 to 20 years. It is inevitable that we will need to be more efficient in our water use.

Studies show that an average suburban house can reduce their water consumption by 30-40% without sacrificing any comforts (from about 250 litres/person/day to 150 litres/person/day). In addition, if grey water is recycled for garden use, household water use can be reduced by an astounding 60% or more with ease.

Waste water should be seen as a resource rather than a burden. A lot can be done with "water waste' , if we are prepared to make some small changes, it is a start dont you think? We can't even begin to imagine the world with no water or little resources thereof?

Here is a subtle reminder of what we can all try do around our own homes!

The bathroom is where the most water waste happens, so we can all help conserve water by making these easy changes in your home:

Reduce the toilet flush volume – this alone can save you 20% of your total water consumption with no reduction in convenience. Older toilets have cisterns of around 11 litres, where in fact only half of this water volume is ever necessary. Modern toilets have more sensible cisterns of around 6 litres, and even this is unnecessarily wasteful for flushing liquids. Dual Flush devices are ideal. To reduce the flush volume without any new installations, you can put a displacement container in the cistern – try a 2 litre coke bottle filled with water, and a little sand as ballast.

Fix any leaking taps or pipes. Even a small leak from a tap can waste up to 75 litres of water a day.

Install water-saving shower heads and aerators.

Additionally, cut down your time in the shower and avoid taking baths. Taking even a 5-minute shower can waste up to 150 litres of water. Worse, a bath can use twice as much.

Turn off the water while shaving, washing your face, or brushing your teeth.

Water saving tips in the rest of your household:

Water your plants early in the morning or in the evening. This will reduce the amount of water that evaporates throughout the day.

Learn about water-wise gardening!

Use mulch around plants and trees to hold water in the soil.

Use grey water. Grey water is water that is recycled from domestic activities such as showering or doing laundry. Using this water in your garden is a way to recycle and ultimately conserve. Installing a system to pump grey water (i.e. from the washing machine, basins, shower and bath) to the garden, most households will eliminate the need for any additional garden watering. This alone will reduce your consumption by 35%.

Match the size of your laundry load with water volume.

Repair dripping taps by replacing the washer. If a tap is dripping at a rate of 1 drop per second, you could be wasting up to 10,220 Liters per year!

So lets not forget in our every day lives how precious our water is, it is one of the vital gifts from mother earth that we need to spare!

Leaping in to the year...2012!

Its 2012 and there is an extra day in the year ! Great news dont you think ?... an extra day to perhaps do something special or adventurous that you have thought of doing for a while now.
The more traditional theories taking place are for the ladies to take lead in the marriage proposals :)

The history behind the leap year is that it is needed to keep our calendar in alignment with the Earth's revolutions around the sun. It takes the Earth approximately 365.242199 days (a tropical year) to circle once around the Sun. If we didn't add a day on February 29 nearly every 4 years, we would lose almost six hours every year. After only 100 years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days! Bizzare isn't it?

Other theories concluded in the ancient Roman Calendar added an extra month every few years to maintain the correct seasonal changes. But Julius Caesar implemented a new calendar – the Julian Calendar in 45 BCE (Before Common Era) with an extra day added every 4 years. At the time, Leap Day was February 24, because February was the last month of the year! But now we follow the modern Gregorian Calendar! People born on February 29 are also all invited to join The Honor society of Leap Year Day Babies!

So what ever your beliefs or superstitions, make the most of your extra day this year and make it an adventure or special memory to add to your book of life in 2012!

Tips on how to transform into an eco- tourist in 2012

So turning a new green leaf in 2012, here are a few tips on how you can transform and support being a international eco - tourist!

1. I never considered the following facts which we use and consume on a daily basis!
It is known as virtual water... the water footprint.

* To produce an apple weighing around 100 grams, 70 litres of water is used.
* One slice of wheat bread requires 40 litres.
* The water footprint of a beer, 75 litres, pales in comparison to that of the hamburger that often accompanies it, which comes in at a whopping 2,400 litres. In fact, beef requires a full 15,500 litres of water to produce just 1kg.

.....and it is not just what we eat and drink!!

* One A4 sheet of 80gr paper, processed from wood, requires 10 litres of water - something to consider before printing out the joke email that will be discarded later.

* The global average footprint of one cotton shirt is 2,700 litres; for one kilogram it’s 11000 litres.

* One kilogram of leather requires 16,600 litres of water (global average).

South Africans consume , per capita 2,500 litres of water per day, but not by drinking or cooking or gardening alone. What we overlook is just how much is required for production of those goods we take for granted.

South Africa is facing a critical water shortage and here’s the thing, those of us with who live comfortably will not be the first affected despite being the country’s biggest consumers. The poor, whose water footprints are in many cases negligible, will suffer first, giving rise to more problems than just higher prices and water cuts; these problems will affect everyone. We waste a lot of water but if each of us developed just one water-saving habit, we’d be able to make a big difference. So please let us all continue our efforts.. and even more!

When chosing your travel packages be aware of your surrounds, just because you are not paying for the water bill does not give you the pass to waste uneccesary. Your choice of establishments & destination should be compliant , responsible venues will be proud to share their efforts and complacency in their green contributions.

African Chapter Tours encourages and promotes such travel packages, so you can rest assured your choice with us, is already a start in the green direction!

Do you know our Invasive plant species in South Africa?

It's an exciting and refreshing vibe now that Spring is here.... always a season to look foward to!

It is always very tempting to work in our gardens and watch all the spring foilage start flourishing it gives one a great sense of accomplishment to actually see the benefits of hard work digging beds , pruning and pampering the new life in the garden when all the colours start to spring!

However I am always fascinated by which plants are actually classified as invasive as some are common in all our gardens and invasives are some times pretty to look at and sometimes quite a focal point in our own gardens!

It is estimated that there are approximately 27 000 indigenous species in South Africa and 9000 foreign plant species that have been introduced over the past few centuries . Of these 9000 exotic or alien introductions, 348 have been identified as bad ecologically damaging invader plants.

The existing law divides these plants up into three categories, however regulations passed under the Conservation of Agriculture Resources Act, 1983 (Act no 43) only identifies 198 of the worst invasive alient plants species and declared illegal weeds. Although gardeners are only obliged to remove and destroy category 1 plants, eco friendly gardens endeavouring to rid their gardens of any designated invader weeds.

Here are a few images to help identify those declared weeds in category 1:

Bugweed, one of the worst invasives both in gardens and the country side. It is spread by various birds, buck and monkeys depositing its seeds after eating the fruits.

Cats Claw Creeper .This invasive creeper flowers between September until February. An attempt is being made to control it with the release of a beetle that specifically lives off the leaves.

Indian Shot - Canna. This is invading Stream banks and moist sites in the warmer parts of our country. The more showy hybrids that dont set seeds are permitted.

Oleander - This Mediterranean bush with pink, white or red blooms with a single row of petals has spread in to water courses, particularly rocky ones in semi-arid mountain valleys. The double flowers forms which have seeds taht are sterile are permitted.

These are obviously just a couple that I highlighted but possibly often seen and not aware how invasive they are! So get to know them and pull them out and replace with indigenous alternatives!

This has been a goal of African Chapter Tours and now through advanced technology we have made this happen... hoorah!!

We were also very fortunate to have been awarded 2nd place in the Europ Car Green office competition, which we are very grateful for and like to see this as a feather in our green cap!

Apart from this move to reduce our carbon emissions with our reduced travelling as well as reducing our office space, there has been a continuous effort made in our daily operations and business ethics as well as encouraging our travel partners in the same direction.

If your company has not already taken some steps yet into changing the way forward with reducing your carbon footprints.. there is no good time like the present! We would like to share a few simple tips in creating a greener approach to the office.

We all know the 3 R.s by now reuse, reduce and recycle not much more needs to be said on this topic but there are some other points if interest.

Perhaps use second hand furniture instead of expensive plastic based office furniture by adding some funky antique pieces or locally handmade "african" furniture.

Make use of natural light in your office if you can, alternatively make sure lights are fitted with compact florescent bulbs or LED's

Fill your office with plants for the health and happiness of your staff, plants give off oxygen and are great for brightening up your four walls naturally!

Boil water and keep a flask or use an urn, rather than boiling the kettle to make one cup each time!

Remember just about everything can be recycled or even ewaste such as electronics.

Invest in a glass water bottle to keep drinking water in, it is a healthier option and eliminates the use of plastic!

Its almost SPRING, so this is a great way to start a fresh new approach to your office!

Anyone lose their jacket?

On a much lighter message today! Having two young girls of my own this really hit close to my heart.

However there is good news ... or alteast hope and that there is action in place in South Africa, part of a global effort to prevent and bring further awareness to our communities and industry players.

African Chapter Tours have joined in with this fight as we pledge our support through www.thecode.org. This is the code of conduct for the protection of children from sexual exploitation in travel and tourism. This is an industry driven tourism iniative in collaboration with EPCAT International, funded by UNICEF and supported by UNWTO. Herewith some of the facts and preventions provided by these organisations. We pledge to all interested tourism partners to show their support in such initiatives and help the prevention there of.

Who are these CHILD EXPLOITERS? This does not only include paedophiles which is a standard belief but increasingly so called "situational child sex abusers" who are sexually indiscriminate or wish to "experiment with child sex partners". Most perpetrators are local clients and a growing number are foreigners who are lesiure visitors or business travellers in a host country. South Africa's hosting of the 2010 World Cup was an alarm for concern! Exploitation occurs in all countries mainly South East Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. The Western world accounts for the greatest demand for child sex. Some sex offenders convince themselves this is a good deed in that it helps the child to obtain money for food leading to better living conditions and for many some believe that the risk of contracting HIV is lower when engaging with a child than with an adult. However in some areas more than 50 per cent of children are infected with HIV.

Much of the awareness existing today is due to the efforts made by this non profit organization initiated in 1990 - EPCAT representing 65 counties, with the main goal to combat the commercial exploitation of children. After a declaration and an agenda for action was adopted, 122 nations committed themselves against all forms of commercial sexual exploitation of minors, with the Agenda for action covering co operation, preventative work, protection, rehabillitation and youth participation. These are the recommendations following the agenda for action during the World Congress in Stockholm in August 1996.

Co-operation between countries and various sectors of society.

Mobilising the tourist industry and the business world so that their facilities and networks are not used for child sex trade.

Criminalising the commercial sexual exploitation of children.

Actions to ensure that laws plans and programmes are established and carried out.

Establish special units within the police

Recovery and rehabilitation of children.

Preventative measures in the form of education and information

By joining THE CODE, there are 6 criteria for us to adopt and commit to implement-:

To establish an ethical policy regarding commercial sexual exploitation of children.

To train the personnel in the country of origin and travel destinations.

To introduce a clause in contracts with suppliers , stating a common repudation of commercial sexual exploitation of children.

To provide information to travellers by means of catalogues, brochures ,inflight films, ticket slips, home pages etc.

To provide information to local "key persons" at the destinations.

To report annually.

To read more about THE CODE, please visit the relevant websites relating. www.fairtourismsa.org.za/thecode

LETS ALL CONTRIBUTE AND STAND TOGETHER TO STOP CHILD EXPLOITATION!

The "green" leafed plant

I can't help talking about everything green it is definetly the latest buzz word and very much part of our African Chapter legacy and has been for a good while. I came across an interesting article based some of the facts aswell as the controversy surrounding the hemp plant. An interesting read ..... although not travel related at all, but going back to maintaining a greener environment and creating a renewable economy!

There is a petition currently circulating asking goverment to join other countries in growing hemp for industrial purposes (legally that is). Some of the countries alreading participating include Australia, Canada,Great Britain , Italy, Netherlands and many more (28 in total).

So what is the benefits of growing industrial hemp you ask? You can create clothing, housing, food, fuel, natural plastics and other locally useful and globable marketable comsumer products out of it.... resulting in jobs too. Hemp is currently a multi billion a year industry and growing!

There are over 50 000 record uses for this plant and amazing enough every part of the plant can be utilized. The outer stalks for textile fibres, the inner stalk for building materials and cellulose, the seed kernel for nutritional oils, the seed husk for biodegradable plastics and the leaves for re-tilling and fertilizing the soil after harvest.

Hemp is also grown organically and is naturally resistant to most pests so no pesticides or herbicides are required in the cultivation. An acre field of hemp can yield up to 8 tons of dry fiber thats about 3 times more than cotton . The same crop will also give 4 times more paper than an acre of forest trees. Hemp also grows in about 3 or 4 months compared to a tree taking up to 20 years to reach a size worth destroying. The hemp plant has also a rapid rate of photosynthesis therefore producing more oxygen!

A crop that contribute to a more sustainable economy according to these facts? "GREEN". Awareness has now officially been created in every industry and even in our homes. After attending a Enviromental Law Workshop touching only on the basics, this was really an eye opener and really devastating to see what current situation we sit in not only in SA but our world. It is time to act now if you havent already!
African Chapter Tours have for the past couple of years been doing our homework and have been looking at the various ways in which to incorporate " green products" but in order to do this we needed to set an example and only then could we really stand up and encourage others and possible lead in the same direction, in order for us all to make a small diference! African Chapter Tours are part of the Heritage Charter Programme and were the first tour operator to join this association. Now to encourage others to follow or learn more from those making great efforts to do their bit as we will never be able to do enough alone!

So what is a green product? In a simple overview it covers many aspects that influence our environment and it is those efforts made by these individual products in the prevention or even putting back a bit of what mother nature gave us. It incorporates our accommodation establishments right to any travel related experience, acting responsibly and preventing further destruction to our enviroment as well as the inclusions of social responsibilities to create secure ecologically sustainable developments in our communities which inadvertly comes back to same concerns affecting our enviroment.

Pollution is clearly the main factor caused by human destruction . The definition of Pollution as stipulated by our national enviromental management act, means change in the enviroment caused by any of the following -: Substances, Radio Active or other waves or noise, dust or heat. Althought that is quite vague we all have a good idea what the damaging factors are.Our two most important sources under pressure is our water and air - the neccesity for all LIFE!

WE all need to implement Enviromental Management Systems if you are not already in the long run it saves money too . As indivual and small establishment we can all start somewhere! There is plenty of resource information available, so lets all act now!

African Chapter Tours will be implementing a carbon foot print rating to our packages in the near future and rating all products qualifying with our green leaf for enviromentally conscious products to guide our customers in make the right green choices!

I conclude with this proverb.. It makes for a great weekend away LESS than 1 hour from Johannesburg or Pretoria, a criteria we all bound to because of time restaints and busy schedules.

The area has been under transformation over the past couple of years.. with the development of the BIG 5 Game Reserve, still in progress. The Greater Dinokeng area covers approximately 281 000ha of rural land incorporating Roodeplaat, Cullinan ,Rayton and open bushveld north of Moloto Rd.

The attractions are plentiful, with affordable bush getaways, adventure, culture and history therefore catering for all interest and occassions.

African Chapter recently joined a site visit to various "off the beaten track" highlights adding to a very informative insight to the area, which anyone can incorporate into your package.

This included a Refilwe Cultural Tour visit incoporating stops at Vukuzenzele Agric Project and Tshepong Centre, where many purchases took place in support of Beadwork crafts,a project operated by disabled people. Another fascinating historical stop is the Cullinan Diamond Tour where a surface tour is offered sharing information on the history of the mining of diamonds. An underground Tour is also offered with more indepth information and experience.

Currently African Chapter Tours offers the following in the area, with our preferred suppliers whom we have received many great reviews on, from clients who have visited.

4 star luxury Game Lodge Stay

Animal Encounters and Sunset Game Drives

Bush Spas

Tented Accommodation, including walks & In line with Heritage Day in September, I wanted to share this historical experience of a different kind with you! With our many diverse cultures in South Africa, we have cultural villages that educate us and take us back to basics and traditions of our Zulu,Venda and Xhosa tribes for example, depicting their survival, family lives and historical artefacts relating.

Our team at African Chapter have recently been able to experience and discover memorablia from the mountains of Magliesberg and neighbouring Hartebeespoort Dam area. These are the remains , museums and historical sites dating back to the boer war in between 1800 and 1900's, part of our South African History and Heritage.

The Askari 4 star Lodge in Magaliesberg boasts one of the largest privage collections of oxwagons, carts and other animal drawn vehicles from the era. The main building was built in the 1800's and every effort has been made to restore this wonderful building to the splendour it was approximately 150 years ago! Their museum also tells the story of this area, where the British were defeated on the 13 December 1900 by the Boers led by Generals De La Rey, Smuts and Beyers.

You will also find trace of history going even further back in time, from the San Bushmen, with sightings of carvings and stone age tools found in this area, with much of these finding available for viewing in the history museum. Historical and bush walks into this richely fascinating heritage is available on request.

Another discovery is a quaint venue and hideaway, where you relive the romance of the early Pioneers and Jack of the Bushveld era. Expereince authentically restored oxwagon accommodation with Panoramic views from the Witswatersberg Mountains. On site walking trails, nature museum and history museum. Re live the boer tradition together with superb hospitality and good old fashion boerekos at the Oxwagon Lodge.

To experience this small part of our South African history, day trips & overnight stays are all possible. This makes for a great themed corporate event or conference or special occassion. Send us your preferences and we will put you in touch with this piece of boer heritage!

Malaria Free Big 5 Reserves

Malaria areas often deter us from visiting such locations in game reserves, especially if a last minute decision to travel, short stays or if you travelling with children. However there are many reserves that are malaria free and are home to our BIG 5 animals.
I recently visited Nambiti Game Reserve in Kwa Zulu Natal (being one of these malaria free reserves) and from Johannesburg it really is not such a long distance drive as it sounds - 3 hours and possible another 30 minutes to your lodge through the reserve, depending on the location. Durban residents are only 2 and half hours away.

The Nambiti Game reserve is a 20 000 hectare reserve located near Ladysmith and boasts over 30 species of game including cheetah, hyhena, giraffe, hippo, kudu and eland (and of course the big 5) in this natural bushveld with its many different vegetations and landscapes. The Reserve is also close to the famous battlefelds of the Anglo-Boer War and various other historic sites.

There about 10 lodges in the reserve to chose from, ranging from tented accommodation to luxury suite accommodation all at very affordable rates and great value for money.

I can highly recommend Lions Valley Lodge, 5 star service and luxury spacious suites for under R1800 per person fully inclusive. (oh and great for honeymoons and romantic weekends, each suite offers a jacuzzi on the deck overlooking the valley!) This is a great price for this standard of accommodation in a big 5 reserve compared to other regions where the going rates for such lodges ranging from R2500 to R4500 pp!

Send me you feedback and further experiences at any other of the Nambiti Game Lodges OR other Malaria Free Game Reserves, our team would greatly appreciate your comments and reviews!

South Africa you have done us proud as a nation!

South Africa you have done us proud. There is a lot of excitement in the air despite the challanges and negativity that has been hovering over various issues that have arose over the last few months (which we do not need to get in to). Well Done South Africa, lets all rise the occassion and if anything make the most of showcasing our country even if you are not a soccer supporter! Everyone is asking us to act it out but how do we contribute as a traveller and be responsible?
Responsible travel is about putting back in travel what you get out of it. I did some of my own investigation and here are some simple points to consider next time you travel!

When booking with supplier or operator ask to see their responsible travel policy or environmental policy.

Help the local community by buying local produce rather than imported goods

If bargaining to buy an item, bear in mind that a small amount to you could be extremely important to the seller, be realistic and fair!

Use public transport, hire a bike or walk where convenient or possible, you will meet local people and get to know the place far better. Always be safe and considerate!

Use water sparingly, it is precious!

Use electricty wisely and switch off lights when you leave a room and uneccesary equipment. Play your part in reducing greenhouse emissions.

Don't discard litter when you are in ,out of the way places and attractions, take it with you and dispose when you have reached somewhere to discard in a dustbin. Some rural areas and outlying attraction's waste disposal is a problem, so it seems like it will go unnoticed if you do the same - dont do it!

Do not buy products made from endangered species, hard woods, shells from beach traders or ancient artefacts (which would probably be stolen anyway). Be aware of the source of the items, when buying products in curio and gift shops.

Respect local cultures, traditions and holy places. For example - ask permission to take photos of local people.

Do give the tourism industry feedback on your experiences, it helps us better services and assists with problem areas. It can even boost confidence where it is needed and appreciation for those putting that extra effort in!!

So do YOUR bit and be diligent in your travels and enjoy our splendid country and its offerings!

What is there to do in Joburg?

I am amazed sometimes when mingling with friends and just through general chit chat, local jozi's saying there is nothing to do in Joburg compared to living in Durban or Cape Town. But you are well rewarded with a delicious three course meal and if you so wish, a warm comfortable overnight stay in a luxury boutique hotel to compliment the evening.
The Stargazing events are themed (and occur once a month),with this particular evening celebrating the 40th anniversary of Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong's July 1969 moon landing.

Resident astronomer Vincent Nettman entertained and informed us about the wonders of the galaxy. Unfortunately the overcast weather did not allow us the opportunity gazing at the sky through the telescopes as this would of enabled us to view the moon's surface on which Armstrong historically declared that he had taken "one small step for man, on giant leap for mankind".

Your overnight stay is at the 4 star Maropeng Hotel situated in the Cradle of Humankind, next to the Maropeng Museum. It is between 30 minutes to an hours drive, depending on where you are travelling from in Gauteng, so makes a perfect weekend overnight stay or evening out for something a little different, family outing or a special occassion.

You can combine this overnight stay with day activities offered in The Cradle. For those of you who have not yet heard of this whole new world of discovery out there... The Cradle is a truely fascinating area and is also a world heritage site. The museum is a world class exhibition, focusing on the development of humans and our ancestors over the past few million years. The historical heritage is most intriguing and a topic to be enjoyed by all. The experience is interactive, educational with an element of excitement!
A short drive away is the Sterkfontein Caves adjacent to the Rhino and Lion Park. The tours at Sterkfontein caves start above ground and then take visitors deep into the caves This site has been credited with many of the famous discoveries including "Mrs Ples" and "Little Foot".

Please view our information and packages on Astronomy Evenings or out and about in the Cradle, for further information or ideas for your next Sensational Winter Escape!

African Chapter Tours invites you to join us at the Planetarium at Wits University on Thursday the 16th July at 18h45 - 22h45 . The evening takes a look at our southern skies at a beginners level as we star hop around the southern constellations. Adults R26,50 and Children R17. All Welcome. So much hype going down whether it's talk of 2009 or 2010, South Africa is in the headlines. My job is to keep up to date with product, technology and what hot and happening in the travel industry and that's proving to be quite a challenging task... there is just never a dull moment!
Having said this - it is not a bad thing at all! Yes, we are going through a world recession but the world is still turning and life as we know it is still moving on....faster.

I think everybody in the travel industry and many other industries are changing their outlooks, adjusting and re focusing in these trying times. I recently had the pleasure of listening to Micheal Jackson... no "the other Micheal Jackson" as he is known - a motivational speaker who had a very interesting view to CHANGE and yes the economic crisis is a metamorphisis of change together with it's challenges but the change is imperative and we have to accept it to be able to move on to the next chapter! .

Our budgets may be tighter but the travel industry can feel it too and are making a huge effort to accommodate the CHANGE and I have never in my 15 years in travel seen so many specials and great value for money! Yes, this is fantastic news to you and I.. maybe that 10 day holiday abroad isn’t possible this year but there is still so much unexplored in areas and hidden gems in South Africa. If you havent explored that "local is lekker" you are missing out.Check out MARCH AND APRIL Specials for some ideas, if you dont see what you are looking for please ask our friendly team for assistance, there is so much choice - we cant possibly list it all!

With the winter months fast approaching, more outstanding deals will be squeezing in. Watch our site for British Lions Packages and PLAN your travels in the next coming months, it's going to be buzzing with activity with Federation cup visitors, Lions Rugby supporters - you don't want to be left out of the action these coming months!

Welcome to 2009 and our first Blog!

With January almost at the end, we are all well into the swing of things again, after holidays and festive season celebrations!
